PURPOSE OF SCHOOLS’ EMERGENCY SIMULATIONS & DRILLS

PURPOSE OF SCHOOLS’ EMERGENCY SIMULATIONS & DRILLS

Emergency simulations and drills are intended to achieve two primary objectives.

One, to establish situational awareness—to perceive, analyse, and effectively respond to a given situation.

For example:

a) fire emergency requires evacuation to a safe location (designated assembly point)

b) intruder alert requires a lockdown of facilities

c) earthquake/tsunami alert requires evacuation and retreat to higher ground once shaking has ended.

Two, to demonstrate best practices—according to Vince Lombardi, “Only perfect practice makes perfect”. Hence, best practices are intended to ensure that the appropriate standards, guidelines, methods, or techniques are employed to achieve the best outcomes during potential risks, hazards, or emergency events that might occur.
