Dr. Fauci Says People With This Syndrome Should Not Get Vaccinated

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.

Many are thrilled that the COVID-19 vaccine is finally here and can’t wait until it is their turn to get it. Although the vaccine is proven to be safe and effective, there are certain people who should not get it.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, discussed the vaccine’s side effects and who should not take it on News 12’s The New Normal.

Avoid the Vaccine if You Have Guillain-Barré (Ghee-YAN Bah-RAY) Syndrome (GBS)

According to Dr. Fauci, those who should be first in line to get vaccinated are “the ones that have a more likely chance of getting a severe outcome” if infected with COVID-19.

This includes “vulnerable people, the elderly individuals with underlying conditions, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, individuals with those types of diseases,” Dr. Fauci explained.

“In addition, people who are immunocompromised, for example cancer patients who are on chemotherapy and a variety of autoimmune patients who might have suppressed immune response.”

However, not everyone should get vaccinated, including those who suffer from Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Dr. Fauci explained the syndrome as a “reaction, which is a rare neurological reaction to either influenza or the vaccine for influenza, we recommend that those people do not get vaccinated because you might trigger a similar, serious response.”

He did emphasize that there are not many who fall into this category. “You got to remember, that number of people is very, very small,” he said.

Dr. Fauci also warned that those with a history of extreme allergic reactions should be cautious.

He said that “someone who has a history of a severe allergic reaction, that those individuals don’t get vaccinated now with this product, or if they do get vaccinated, they do it in a location that has the capability of responding to an allergic reaction. You just don’t want to go and get in a place that has no capability.”

Dr. Fauci Says Side Effects are Minimal and Encourages Everyone Else To Take the Vaccine

Some side effects Dr. Fauci warned about are—”a sore arm, a little bit, you might feel a little bit fatigue and down for 24 hours to 36 hours at the most, a small percentage of the people might get a fever that would last for 24 hours. You take a Tylenol, you can take care of that without much problem.”

He says the average person could experience the same side effects as they did with other vaccines.

It is crucial to continue following safety guidelines until you are allowed to get the new COVID-19 vaccine and wait the recommended about of time to ensure immunity. Doing so will ensure your health and the health of those around you.

FDA Warns About 13 COVID Vaccine Side Effects
Dec 29, 2020

The first coronavirus vaccine is finally here, but so are the side effects that come with it. After getting the vaccine, two medical workers in the U.K. reported severe allergic reactions. As a result, the FDA has warned Americans not to take the vaccine if they have a history of severe allergic reactions.

Besides that, “we have not seen any severe adverse events that we could relate to the vaccine thus far,” says Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert. “Safety is a very important issue,” Fauci added, “when you look at the hundreds and hundreds of millions of people who’ve been vaccinated, the long-term adverse events have been less than minuscule in the big picture of the protection that you get from a vaccine.”

However, other side effects do still exist. For the first time, the FDA has just announced the possible side effects publicly. Continue reading to learn what they are and how you can ensure your health and the health of those around you.

13. Injection Site Pain
Dr. Fauci says you can expect “pain in the arm.” This pain is apparently similar to the pain you’d feel from the flu shot. The injection site will feel tender for a bit but will fade. However, some have reported the pain to be more severe.

12. Injection Site Swelling or Redness
Former FDA Chief Dr. Margaret Hamburg told CNBC, reported side effects also include “local swelling, irritation” in your arm.

11. Fever
Dr. Fauci has said to expect possibly getting “a fever.” Although it is likely to be mild. [Some experienced a severe fever].

10. Tiredness
According to Hamburg, a “sense of fatigue” is also possible, but it probably means the vaccine is working.

9. Headache
[Ranging from mild to severe].

8. Muscle Pain
If you experience muscle pain, it is likely to be in the arm but can appear in other places. Some pains could be a sign of antibodies forming in response to the vaccine.

7. Chills
“In a percentage of patients, they had chills and low-grade fever,” said Hamburg.

6. Joint Pain
Patients should be told: “they could have fever, including rarely high fever, fatigue, headaches, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, enough so that one could miss a day of work,” Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of the FDA’s advisory committee evaluating the vaccines, told NPR.

5. Nausea
It is common for mild nausea to be a side effect of the flu shot as well.

4. Feeling “Unwell”
If you experience any of the previously mentioned side effects, you may describe yourself as feeling “unwell.” This feeling of discomfort likely means your immune system is doing its job.

3. Swollen Lymph Nodes
Lymph nodes are located in your armpits, neck, head and groin areas. Their job is to filter your body’s substances.

“A locally enlarged lymph node usually refers to immunological activity after vaccination,” the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare reported. “In particular, vaccines containing live pathogens effectively form antibodies in the lymph nodes closest to the vaccination site. An enlarged lymph node is usually detected within one week of vaccination….While enlarged lymph nodes do not require treatment, they must be monitored.”

2. Severe Allergic Reaction (Remote Chance)
The Norweigan American Hospital stated on its website:

“There is a remote chance that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine could cause a severe allergic reaction. A severe allergic reaction would usually occur within a few minutes to one hour after getting a dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. Signs of a severe allergic reaction can include:
1. Other Possible Side Effects
“These may not be all the possible side effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. Serious and unexpected side effects may occur. Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine is still being studied in clinical trials,” reports the FDA. “If you experience a severe allergic reaction, call [5-1-1], or go to the nearest hospital. Call the vaccination provider or your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.”
